Human Library Book Application
The Human Library ® is a library of people and their experiences facing prejudice. Instead of physical books, actual people are on loan for conversations. Our program with The Human Library ® aims to create a safe space for conversation where topics subject to taboo, marginalization, or stigmatization can be openly addressed without condemnation. The people acting as Books have directly or indirectly been exposed to prejudice, bias, or discrimination based on aspects of their race, religion, sexual orientation, class, gender identity, or disability.

We will be hosting a program at the Downers Grove Public Library on October 16, 2024, from 4 pm to 8 pm.

We are currently looking for Books to participate in The Human Library ®! Anyone applying should be aware that opening yourself up to be read as a Book will include getting vulnerable and sharing your personal stories, so we highly encourage anyone interested to consider their own health before applying. After all applications are reviewed, selected candidates will be contacted for an interview. If selected, Books will be required to complete online training with The Human Library ® (a computer and/or space to complete the training is available upon request).

If you are willing to be trained to share your experiences, or if you have previously served as a Book and would like to volunteer at our program, please submit the following form by May 22, 2024

If you have any questions, please contact us at humanlibrary@dglibrary.org! You can also learn more at The Human Library's website: humanlibrary.org.

Why would you like to become a Book? *
Book and Title Information
Please answer the following questions about your experiences living through stigmatization and prejudice.

If you have experiences that span multiple potential titles, please fill out multiple applications. Each application should describe the experiences that coincide with that particular title. For instance, if you are deaf as well as body modified, and would feel comfortable sharing your experiences through both lenses, please submit two separate applications, one focusing on your experiences being Deaf, one focusing on your experiences being Body Modified.
What Book Title would you select for yourself (in 1-3 words)? *
Rather than a physical book, Readers (patrons attending the program) will have the opportunity to check out a human Book. These Books share their story and describe their experiences living through stigmatization and prejudice through open dialogue with the Reader.

Your Title is the label that society has given you that results in prejudice.

The Human Library bases their Book Titles on what they consider the 15 Pillars of Prejudice. The parenthesis next to each pillar is an example of a Book Title given by The Human Library ®, but by no means is it the only Book Title that would fit within that pillar.
1. Addiction (Former Drug User)
2. Disability (Deaf)
3. Ethnicity (Black)
4. Family (Child of an Alcoholic)
5. Gender & Sex (Transgender)
6. Health (Anorexic)
7. Ideology (Feminist)
8. Lifestyle (Body Modified)
9. Mental Health (Schizophrenia)
10. Neurodiversity (Autism)
11. Occupation (Police)
12. Religion (Muslim)
13. Sexuality (Bisexual)
14. Social Status (Refugee)
15. Victim/Survivor (Rape Survivor)
What relevant experiences with bias and/or prejudice would you like to share with readers? *
Please explain moments in which you have experienced prejudice or bias in relation to your Book Title.  *
Have you ever participated in a Human Library event? If so, where? Were you a Book or a Reader?
There is required virtual training for Books facilitated by the Human Library Organization. The approximate time involved is three hours, non-consecutively, as well as a run through of readings with other Books in preparation for the program. Are you able to commit to this training in addition to the four-hour program on October 16th? *
Please share any comments or accommodations you need to participate.
Please check this box if you plan on submitting another response under a different Book Title.
